The basic gameplay mechanics are the same, but the visual style, premise, and execution are very different. I think a lot of people dismissed it because they played Doom3 and saw a few screen shots and figured this was a repeat. I don't know why this game slipped past me. With the 8800GTX at 1680 x 1050 I can run most of the game with 16xQ antialiasing, but later in the game I dropped it down to normal 16x aa because the action was getting a little thick and the environments a little more complex. The graphics are really good, too, and it runs well because it is mostly in-doors. There are even some really cool vehicle sequences that are actually fun.Īt one point I was almost laughing outloud at all the little audio details and chatter they included to make a friendly mothership come alive.

There is some epic sci-fi stuff going on here.

You go through some pretty outlandish environments and there is a lot of variety. Unlike Doom3 which was basically one dark corridor after another, Quake 4 is well lit and the environments are really nice looking. It isn't as sophisticated as Half-Life 2 but it almost has that sort of polish. Stuff is going on around you-you are only a part of the action. The developers actually did a good job at making it seem like there is a large scale invasion going on. So the whole game takes place in the middle of this huge raging battle. In Quake 4 earth is invading the Strogg homeworld and counterattacking. It actually has a plot and it is a cool one at that. Quake 4 is the game Doom3 should have been.

I watched youtube videos of the related gameplay and they were embarrassingly bad, like "my house" maps for Doom 2.The following pertains to the PC version, single player campaign:Īfter picking up Quake 4 for $20 the other day and playing through most of it for the first time, I figured I would post a short review because it seems a lot of people skipped this game. I mean, wtf, a tiny enemy, no vibrant color, no personality, nothing to distinguish.Īnd if you want to talk about Quake 2: Juggernaut, dear sub-deities, just give me a couple of pages and let me explain how they imprinted my childhood even though they were fundamentally flawed in a grand sense and certainly come in 3rd place to The Reckoning.Īpparently there was (were) at least 1 (or 2) more expansion pack I never bought.

That was obtuse and un-fun, it's like they imagined us as being enthralled with free-look so much via Quake 2 that we wanted to observe every ceiling for a robot that was gonna drop explosives if we didn't pay attention by looking directly at the ceiling for a dumb dome robot with absolutely no satisfying death or suffering animation. In response to the inevitable counterpoint that Quake 2: Ground Zero was superior to The Reckoning: I can't understand the obsession with turret/sentry bots on every ceiling and wall where the player is (the level designers are completely at fault and went mad with power). People say a lot that the Ground Zero expansion pack is arguably superior. There were so many weapons that you could select some from your backpack (this expansion pack came 2nd in the lineage after Quake 2: Ground Zero) and many of the new weapons were utterly fantastic. The Reckoning expansion pack is arguably superior.

Modern n00bs had no idea how to play this shit. Quake 2 was good but you know, it had parts that felt like Hexen.
